    The Ultimate Guide to Oil Catch Cans: Protecting Your Engine from the Inside Out

    If you love four-wheel driving, touring the Australian outback, or simply want your modern turbo-diesel or petrol engine to last as long as possible, you have likely heard of an oil catch can.

    Whilst they may seem like a simple metal reservoir, these clever devices perform a vital role in preventing the internal contamination of your engine.

    As automotive manufacturers introduce stricter environmental standards, modern engine designs have changed significantly.

    Unfortunately, some of these changes can lead to severe carbon buildup, reduced fuel economy, and expensive mechanical repairs over time.

    Here is everything you need to know about how catch cans work, why your vehicle needs one, and how they save your engine from choking on its own emissions.

    Understanding the Problem: What is Blow-By?

    To understand why a catch can is necessary, we must first look at how a modern internal combustion engine operates.

    During the combustion cycle, immense pressure is created within the engine cylinders. Whilst the piston rings are designed to form a tight seal against the cylinder walls, they are never 100% perfect.

    A small percentage of high-pressure combustion gases, mixed with vaporised oil and unburnt fuel, slips past the piston rings and enters the crankcase. This mixture is commonly referred to as blow-by.

    If this blow-by gas is left inside the crankcase, it creates excessive pressure that can blow out vital engine seals and contaminate the engine oil. To solve this, manufacturers developed the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system.

    The PCV System and the Carbon Buildup Dilemma

    The PCV system routes these toxic blow-by gases out of the crankcase and feeds them directly back into the engine’s air intake to be re-burnt in the cylinders.

    Legally, manufacturers must use this closed loop to prevent harmful emissions from escaping into the atmosphere.

    Whilst this is excellent for the environment, it can be disastrous for modern Direct Injection (DI) and common-rail turbo-diesel engines. Here is why:

    •     Traditional Engines (Port Injection): Fuel is sprayed before the intake valve. The petrol acts as a constant solvent, naturally washing the intake valves clean of any oil residue carried by the PCV system.
    •     Modern Engines (Direct Injection): Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This means nothing cleans the back of the intake valves. When the hot, oily mist from the PCV system passes over the scorching hot intake valves, it bakes onto the surface, forming hard carbon deposits.

    Over time, this carbon buildup acts like cholesterol in an artery. It restricts airflow, compromises the fuel-air mixture, causes rough idling, and drastically reduces engine performance.

    How Does an Oil Catch Can Work?

    An oil catch can acts as a mechanical filter installed directly inline between the PCV valve and the air intake track. Instead of allowing the oily mist to flow straight into your intake manifold, it is redirected through the catch can.

    Inside a premium, well-engineered catch can, the gas passes through a series of internal baffles or a specialized mesh filter element. This process forces the heavy oil droplets and water vapour to condense out of the suspension.

    The liquid oil falls out of the airflow and collects safely at the bottom of the reservoir, while the cleaned, oil-free air is allowed to continue its journey back into the engine intake.

    Instead of coating your intercooler, turbocharger, and intake valves in sludge, the contamination is trapped inside the container, ready to be drained during your regular vehicle servicing.

    The Top Benefits of Installing a Catch Can

    Investing in an oil filtration kit yields several immediate and long-term benefits for your vehicle’s health:

    •     Prevents Intake Valve Carbon Sludge: By trapping the oil before it hits the hot engine components, you eliminate the primary cause of carbon buildup on the valves.
    •     Maintains Intercooler Efficiency: In turbocharged cars, oil vapour often pools inside the intercooler. A coating of oil drastically minimises the intercooler’s ability to cool down intake air, robbing you of power and fuel efficiency.
    •     Reduces the Risk of Engine Knock (Detonation): Oil vapour entering the combustion chamber effectively lowers the octane rating of your fuel. In petrol vehicles, this can induce premature ignition or engine knock, which can destroy pistons under high loads.
    •     Protects the EGR System: In diesel vehicles, the combination of oily blow-by and soot from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve creates a thick, tar-like paste that completely blocks intake manifolds. A catch can stops this chemical reaction from occurring.

    Choosing the Right System: Baffled vs. Filtered

    Not all catch cans are manufactured equally. When selecting a kit for your vehicle, you will generally choose between two primary internal designs:

    1. Baffled Catch Cans

    These rely on internal walls, multi-stage paths, and stainless steel mesh to slow down the air. The physical barriers cause the oil particles to lose momentum and stick to the metal surfaces. They offer zero flow restriction and require no replacement filters, making them a very reliable, low-maintenance option.

    2. Filtered Catch Cans (Coalescing Systems)

    Systems like the renowned Western Filters ProVent kits use a replaceable paper or synthetic fibre element. These filters are incredibly efficient at separating even the microscopic oil droplets from the air stream. They provide maximum protection but require the filter element to be replaced periodically (typically every 20,000 to 40,000 kilometres).

    Maintenance: How Often Do You Clean It?

    A catch can is not a “set-and-forget” modification. Because it actively collects oil, water, and fuel contaminants, the reservoir has a finite capacity.

    If the can fills up completely, the vacuum from the intake will pull all the collected liquid directly into the engine at once, causing catastrophic hydraulic locking or severe smoking.

    Driving Condition Recommended Inspection Interval Expected Collection Material
    Urban/Highway Commuting Every 5,000 to 10,000 km Clean oil with minimal moisture condensation.
    Heavy Towing / Off-Roading Every 2,500 to 5,000 km Higher volume of dark oil mixed with exhaust soot particles.
    Cold Winter Driving Every 2,000 to 3,000 km Milky mixture dominated by high water condensation.

    Draining the system is straightforward. Most vehicle-specific kits feature a clear drain tube with a tap at the bottom, allowing you to empty the contents into an oil pan without removing the entire unit from the engine bay.

    Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

    If you plan on trading in your vehicle before the factory warranty expires, you might get away without one.

    However, if you intend to keep your vehicle for the long haul, minimize maintenance headaches, and protect your investment against costly manifold cleans, an oil catch can is one of the cheapest insurance policies you can buy for your engine.

    By keeping the internal breathing system clean, you ensure your engine operates with optimal efficiency, reliability, and power for hundreds of thousands of kilometres to come.
